my sister and I, while technically only “stepsisters,” have always been close. we’ve known each other since I was 6 and she was 9. we wanted to get a tattoo that meant something to the both of us. we both love turtles (I have a pretty big obsession with them, even having my own pet turtle named Squirt.) the artist we chose, Kelly Doty at Off the Map Tattoo in Easthampton, MA did a great job drawing up our idea.

This isn’t the BEST picture and it looks a little faded from the way the light hits it, but here’s my cherry blossom tattoo! I struggled for years with self-harm, especially cutting so i got this tattoo to cover alot of my scars. It’s on my left forearm. I know the ink didn’t set perfectly right in some of the scars, but I don’t mind, I still love it.

“From winter brings the spring again”

I got this tattoo after I was brutally attacked and almost murdered my senior year in high school. By a friend who incidentally was very mentally ill. I was supposed to go see Anberlin, Circa Survive, and Foxy Shazaam for my attacker’s birthday but it ended up being the day after I got out of the hospital. Well, somehow my friend got a hold of Anberlin’s manager, they showed up at my house, gave me all of the merch on the tour, everyone had signed a card for me and they arranged for anyone I wanted and me to get in VIP and sit up on the balcony of Waterstreet Music Hall and watch out of harm’s way. Anthony Green of Circa Survive pulled me into a bear hug and told me I inspired him. The man who has been inspiring me since I was twelve. We talked for a few minutes before the show and all of the bands dedicated somehow perfectly relevant songs to me. Anthony also made this speech about being able to do whatever you want to do in life. The whole experience was 100% the most spiritual and meaningful I’ve ever had.
Anyway, Circa Survive had kind of been my sound track in the preceding months and the lyrics are from my favorite song “In the Morning and Amazing.” It just so happened that they ended up having a hugely profound meaning.

I am a photographer who was stabbed in the left eye. Before this happened, my life was dark and isolated and in pieces. After this event, I was ENGULFED in the love and support that had been there all along, but was just laying dormant. No matter how dark and dismal things seem, no matter how deft the winter, the sun and the spring will always come back around. Such is the natural cycle of our universe and everything in it.

An anchor signifies safe, stable and never changing. I got this tattoo to remember to always stay grounded and never forget where I came from. The rope wrapped around the anchor creates a cursive L which is the initial of my last name. I loved the way it came out even if it was my most painful seating.

This is my third and newest tattoo, my second UV tattoo. The compass in the center represents a lot for me, and Tucson is a big part of it. In Tucson, everyone knows which way is “north”, no matter where in the city they are, because of the mountains! As I am going to be moving back to New York soon, (my other UV tattoo is the NY skyline infused in an EKG on my back) I got this tattoo so I can take a bit of Tucson with me. The daisy at the bottom represents my dog, Daisy. She’s been the only anchor/constant in my life, my best friend (sometimes only friend), and companion for the past five years. I love her, and I love this tattoo, with all of my heart. It was done by Scott at Majestik in Tucson, AZ.

my boyfriend got this tattoo by joel huff @ good family tattoo. he has lived in illinois his whole life. sometimes i wonder if he’s ever going to leave for good. he got the mustache to add some character, and to symbolize his blunt sense of humor. many people envied his idea, and he rushed to get it inked before anyone else. i personally find it charming.

This is my seahorse :) Just got it done in January by Steve at Smartbomb in Dayton, OH. The pictures ware taken right after it was finished. Steve is awesome and I’m beyond satisfied with the finished product! I’ll definitely be going back to him for more work :) Besides the fact that seahorses are one of my most favorite creatures, they are a symbol of being able to find peace and tranquility. I spent a very large amount of my life being so unhappy with myself, it was extremely difficult for me to escape the cruelty of other kids when I was growing up. I’ve always known I was a little different, I’ve never really had an established “group” of friends. All I ever wanted was simply to be liked, accepted… Soon after graduating highschool, I gained so much more respect, happiness, and confidence within myself. I’m extremely proud of who I’ve grown to be, and I love the people who have always stood by me with everything I have. I’d probably be nothing without them! Anyways, I’ve finally found the peace and tranquility within myself I had been searching for my whole life.
