Ganesha is also known as the destroyer of vanity, selfishness and pride.
A story, taken from the Puranas, says that Kubera, the treasurer of Svarga (heaven) and god of wealth,came to Mount Kailasa to receive the darshan (vision) of Shiva. As he was extremely vain, he invitedShiva to a feast in the fabulous city, Alakapuri so he could show him all his wealth. Shiva smiled and said to him: ”I can not go, but you can invite my son Ganesha. But I warn you that it is a voraciouseater.”
