“Trooper” on my right wrist, my fifth tattoo. It’s been my nickname for as long as I can remember, and it’s a permanent reminder of how strong I am.

My first tattoo! I can’t believe I actually did it. I’ve wanted to do this for years and I finally pulled the trigger yesterday. :D

Ever since I learned about it, I’ve had a mild obsession with the greyhound’s double suspension gallop. Twice in one stride they are completely suspended in air. I took a photo of my greyhound, Dazzle in a front flight phase (left) and another of Echo in a rear flight phase (right) and used them for the basis of the tattoo.

I was picky about the design, and the artist was very patient with me. It hurt, but it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting it to be. We were done in about half an hour.

Echo died back in January. It feels like I have her back again. ♥

“Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small, unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-two million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.”

Those are the first lines from my all-time favorite book, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams. It tells the story of Arthur Dent, an ordinary Englishman who inadvertently becomes the only human left in the universe. He travels the galaxy with an alien doing research for an electronic book called the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, “the standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom in the universe”  with the famous words “DON’T PANIC” inscribed in large, friendly letters on its cover.”

The story relies heavily on perspective and the idea that even our greatest vices are completely trivial in the broad scheme of things. In one chapter, a super computer called Deep Thought comes up with the number 42 – the answer to “life, the universe, and everything.” There are hundreds of fan-made theories as to why Adams chose 42, but he died without telling anyone what it meant. I think Adams selection of 42 was a completely random decision, which he made to prove that point of his book - that people are so desperate for answers that they will apply meaning to even the most insignificant of things. “42” really tells us that life is what you make it. There isn’t anything remarkably right or horribly wrong about what you’re doing or how you see the world, so long as it works for you.

The tattoo faces me, so anytime I feel stressed, scared, nervous, hopeless, trapped, etc. I look down at my foot and remember that the entire universe is “a harmless enigma, made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as thought it had an underlying truth.” That my reality is merely a fiction designed to account for the discrepancy between my immediate physical sensations and my state of mind. And that I probably should’ve brought a towel.

Not the best picture ever, but you get the gist of it.

So this is my 5th tattoo, my Audrey II quarter sleeve. I was the kid behind the puppet when my high school put on Little Shop of Horrors almost 6 years ago, and it was one of those things that stuck with me. It was kind of a coming-of-age experience, and it began the slow progress I have made over the past several years from a self-conscious, angry kid into a confident, comparatively well-adjusted adult.

That and, one of my closest friends, who I met during rehearsals for this musical, drew up the original sketch. Also, for the sake of having a gnarly horror/comedy themed piece. The banner says, “The meek shall inherit”- a line from one of the numbers and also a reminder to make ballsy decisions, lest I should end up like Seymour.

All work done in one 4-hour sitting with Matt at Revolution tattoo/body modification, in West Lafayette, IN. I gave him a really rough sketch and an idea and he whipped up this little beauty and delivered expertly.

So at first I wasn’t going to post this. It was private and really personal but I love it so much and am so proud of it. I grew up in an abusive household for sixteen years of my life and I never thought things were going to get better. There were many times that I thought the only way out was suicide. Once after telling a close friend I don’t know how I lived like that for so long, he told me I didn’t live. I survived. That really stuck with me. Try everything, always look for the good and don’t ever regret anything. If nothing else, you’ll be a little bit happier, a little bit smarter, and a hell of a lot stronger at the very least.

The answer to life’s many questions. Especially such classics as: What’s the meaning of life? What happens when we die? Are we there yet? What’s for dinner?
It’s also a song lyric from a song of the same name by the wonderful band Local Natives. The song always struck a chord with me.

It’s also my first tattoo and a nice phrase to live by. Because we should all live a more carefree life. Or something like that.

Done by Andrew Green at Precise Piercing & Tattoo in Newington, CT. He’s great, this piece doesn’t justify his skills whatsoever.
