The story behind this is that my parents and family are dutch I was the first generation born in the USA. I have always been fascinated by the war experience my family had in Holland. My parents were born after the war but some of their brothers and sisters were born during or before. And everybody older that that experienced the horror of Nazi occupation. A number of the Jewish part of the family were sent to camps as well. Although none of my family members were resistance fighters in the war i thought i needed a tattoo to commemorate the Dutch resistance during WW2. So I went and got in contact with the tattoo artist who’s work i held in the highest esteem, Peter Lagergren. I was all ready to fly to Sweden and have him do it there. I found out from him that he was coming to New York City. He offered me two appointments that he had recently open. I got to Kings Avenue tattoo on Bowery and i took a look at the sketch. Up to that point I had not seen a tattoo of Peter’s that i had not coveted so i knew that i was going to love it anyways before i got there. And he did not disappoint. It is in his totally unique style. Its hard to explain but its so detailed and yet keeps a lot of the characteristics of Traditional tattooing. The best Neo traditional tattooer IMHO.
He was also a great guy, letting me take a smoke break here and there during our first 6 1/2 session. Which at that time was the longest time i had sat for a tattoo. The Kings avenue shop is a great place to get a tattoo. Its relaxed the guys who work there are great. I actually had a good time listening to the banter of the 5-6 guys all tattooing in one room. And ended up making a tattoo appointment with one of their artists Grez. Anyways Peter wrapped my leg up and said that he would get the rest of the tattoo done the next week. He put the Spitfire fighter plains in and some more color and we were all done.

The minute I saw this picture in 2007 I knew I wanted it tattooed. I wanted Dan Smith to do it because of his passion for Circa Survive just like I have.
To me this picture symbolizes that nothing is permanent. You can move past any challenge in life if you have the motivation to do so. To finally have this tattoo on my leg is a dream come true.

My unique story: I like to live my life worry free. I believe in Jesus and that he died on the cross for my sins.Because he did that for me and everyone else, I have “no worries” about anything in life. Literal translation of “Hakuna Matata” is “There are no worries”. The language is Swahili (Bantu Language) is from northern Kenya to northern Mozambique.
I love my tattoo so much and I am so glad it will stay with me for the rest of my life. It’s my everyday reminder to not worry about even the littlest of things.
I loved getting it done. I specifically wanted my tattoo to be easily readable and still be artistically done, and my tattooist, Chris Johne, did just that! Chris did such a good job on it and I am 100% satisfied with his artwork. He retouched it for free and modified it a little to my preference without hesitation.

I got these about 6 months ago now, not because my Aunt is dying or because they represent a new time in my life or any of that crap like on LA Ink.
