This tattoo, which covers my upper right arm, was done by Joey Ortega at the Triple Crown Tattoo Parlor in Austin, TX

It is at once a nod to Greek mythology (particularly the strength, wisdom, fierceness and dedication to justice that the goddess Athena represents) and Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and serves a very loud “fuck you” to those who support/pass legislature that robs me of my bodily agency and restricts my reproductive rights.

“Nolite te bastardes carborundorum.”

Don’t let the bastards grind you down.

Daffodils are my favorite flower. They are also the symbol of hope for a cure to the American Cancer Society, which is important to me since my mother, grandmother, grandfather, and uncle have all passed away from cancer.

Definitely my favorite tattoo so far.

I got my side piece done at Bushido in Calgary, AB, Canada. It was tattooed by Sam White, and she was beyond amazing! The shop itself is highly regarded, but Sam was so into making sure that everything was the way I wanted! I have had the tattoo for about a year now and it is still my most favourite thing! I still brag about it to people I meet, and I am so in love with it.

This is a tattoo I got to commemorate the end of my Peace Corps journey this past November in Baguio City, Benguet Province, Luzon, Philippines. The artist was my friend, artist and native of Kalinga Province “Kalawang aka Daniel Purisima.” The tattoo took 13 hours total in 3 sessions because it was done tribal style with homemade soot ink, handmade bamboo tools, and tapped into my skin. To say it was intense was an understatement. But it meant a lot to me to experience such an essential part of traditional Filipino culture. I was able to learn about the history from someone who lived on tribal lands and had learned the art from his elders. I was also tattooed in his home surrounded by his family, friends, fellow Peace Corps volunteers and other artwork he has done. It was incredible. It was probably the most memorable experience of my over 2 years of service.

The tattoo has many different meanings but, in a nutshell, it means: to be one with nature and to live a long, happy fulfilling life full of strength, love and wisdom. I also have traditional Filipino script there that translates to “Bahala na…” which is basically Filipino for “What will be, will be…”
